Although the lives of these European socialites are difficult to relate to, the underlying idea of finding oneself is accessible. In Lotus Eaters, these group of “friends” are basically together because of their common background. They don’t really like each other and often belittle and degrade each other without hesitation or subtlety. This is less of a linear story and more of a day-in-the-life of the main character, Alice (Antonia Campbell-Hughes). Antonia brings an innocence to Alice that borders on apathy.
The film itself is beautiful and what fascinated me was all the amazing fashion and how well that actually was portrayed even though it is in black and white. The black and white really underlined how even though they seem glamorous, they are really quite bland.
Lotus Eaters is playing at the Tribeca Film Festival Monday 4/25 and Wednesday 4/27.
Rating: Quite an interesting look at a world that is rather inaccessible to the general population.
