Whether we realize it or not, with every new relationship, we settle into old patterns and create new ones because the common denominator in all of them is ourselves. In Take This Waltz, writer/director Sarah Polley explores this concept through Margot, a late 20’s woman who, after five years of marriage, begins falling for another man. Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn) stars as Margot, with Seth Rogen (The Green Hornet) as her husband, Lou, and Luke Kirby (Luck) as her new romantic interest, Daniel.
On her way back from an excursion to Nova Scotia, Margot’s encounter with a stranger is flirtatious and innocent until it turns out that he lives across the street. The seed is planted and although she and her husband are happily married, she begins to indulge in her fantasies of the neighbor, Daniel.
Margot and Lou’s marriage is childlike and simple. Although they love each other, they don’t express their love with kind words, but rather terrible scenarios, the more gruesome the better. They are affectionate, but not sensual, rarely facing each other. Their playfulness is mimicked in the film by the colors, primary, vibrant and visually appealing, exaggerate the contrast of the couple and the contrast of the relationship Margot has with Lou versus Daniel.
Although Seth Rogen has a lot of experience in comedy, his latest roles in 50/50 and in this are showing his gift for drama as well. He’s a great everyman and will no doubt be taking on more challenging roles in years to come.
One of my favorite scenes is when Margot and Daniel are on the Scrambler ride at the amusement park. Without saying a word, Williams goes through several different emotions in her face and it’s as much of a ride to watch. The best scene of the film is the most erotic; even though it takes place in a coffee shop with both participants completely clothed. Simply amazing.
Rating: Visually striking and emotionally powerful. 8/10
