Inspiring and sweet, Yossi is the story of a closeted gay man living a lonely life as a cardiologist in Tel Aviv when a chance encounter with a woman from his past sets his life in a new direction. Ohad Knoller reprises his role of Yossi from the 2003 Tribeca film, Yossi & Jagger, also directed by Eytan Fox in which Knoller received the Best Actor award.
Yossi is a man that is loveable and kind, but he has a sadness that drowns his confidence and leads him to finding online companions. In a brutally honest scene, Yossi is berated by a potential lover, showing the lengths in which Yossi is willing to seek comfort, if not for only a short time. It’s this type of honesty that elevates the film, keeping it hopeful and not depressing.
Knowing nothing about the film going in, I was not aware of the previous story as this film stands alone. Now after seeing the film and reading about Yossi & Jagger, I can’t wait to see the 2003 film.
Rating: You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll grin from ear to ear. 9/10
