It took 28 years for Disney to release a sequel to the 1982 sci-fi movie Tron, so fans of the series will be happy to hear that rumors claim that the next film in the Tron series is already in the works — and you can check out the teaser when Tron: Legacy hits DVD! Check out the latest rumors after the jump!
Tron: Legacy is still doing solid business at your local multiplex even though it was released over a month ago — and these days of potential blockbusters being released every Friday, the film has legs! However, the film has been even more successful overseas according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, and the always franchise-savvy Disney (they made a sequel to Bambi, for crying out loud!) are not likely to ignore the fact that they have a real moneymaking opportunity on their hands — in fact, there’s already an animated Tron television series, Tron: Uprising, scheduled to air in the summer of 2012.
But according to a story that first broke on Ain’t It Cool News, there’s more plans for the Tron franchise: a teaser of Tron 3 will reportedly appear on the April DVD release of Tron: Legacy. Although Ain’t It Cool News was asked to remove images of the teaser, the site reports that the new footage was shot by Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski shortly before Thanksgiving 2010 and features actors Bruce Boxleitner, Olivia Wilde, Cillian Murphy, and, most surprisingly, Dan Shor reprising his role as RAM from the original Tron (Shor was not in Tron: Legacy). It’s hard to repeat what is supposedly in the trailer without spoiling Tron: Legacy, so I’ll leave it up to you to hit up the link to the story on Ain’t It Cool News if you want to know the details.
Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Tron 3 is greenlit and ready to enter production, but I don’t see why Disney would go through the expense of producing something like this just as an extra with a cliffhanger that would never be resolved.
