We don’t usually talk much about TV shows, much less do reviews of upcoming new series, however, every once in a while there is a series that deserves our review. Our friends over at NatGeo (a.k.a. National Geographic’s) sent over a copy of a new series called Chasing UFOs, that will be debuting June 29th at 9 & 10PM ET/PT. The screener consisted of the first two episodes of the eight part series and I can honestly say, I can’t wait to catch the remaining six as I thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes.
Here is the official synopsis for the series:
Chris Carter’s famous X-Files slogan, “The truth is out there,” is put to the test when a team of pioneering investigators pushes the limits to find the truth behind unexplained UFO sightings. These real-life “Scullys and Mulders” are not looking for more stories on extraterrestrial activity — they want answers. Comprising one believer, one skeptic and one undecided, the dynamic team collects video footage of unusual-shaped lights over Arizona, meets with an alleged alien abduction survivor in Colorado and even tracks glowing orbs near NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
Are we being watched? Is the government hiding information on UFO happenings? Can this team use science and technology to explain mysterious sightings, or will the evidence truly be out of this world? These burning questions motivate our investigative team to travel far and probe deep into a number of strange encounters previously left unanswered.
As the synopsis explains, there are three investigators involved and all with their own theories and beliefs. The first is Erin Ryder who seems to be the leader of the team and the undecided one when it comes to UFOs and the sightings they are investigating. Next member of the team is Ben McGee who is the token skeptic of the group and believes their is a scientific or rational explanation to all of the phenomenons. Finally there is the believe, your quote on quote Mulder of the group, James Fox, who was my personal favorite because great minds think alike.
The first episode was titled Texas is for Sightings, naturally being from Dallas, this episode touched home since the cities being investigated, Stephenville and Dublin, are only 2 hours away. The investigation is in regards to a strange set of lights in the sky that almost the entire town noticed. The crew begins interviewing eyewitness and reviewing some of the footage the locals have shot before adventuring out on their own in hopes of seeing something in the night sky. Do they find something or is the entire trip a hoax? That is something you will have to find out by tuning in on June 29th.
The second episode I felt was a bit more interesting and adventurous than the first episode. The episode is titled Dirty Secrets and the team heads out to Fresno, CA to investigate some of the stories about a secret military base built underground and military officials stalking and watching people who have claimed to have seen something in the sky. As the team digs a bit deeper into these stories they begin to notice that they too are now being watched by people in white vans and also being followed. After stumbling around they discover a underground tunnel and a military airport which leads them on a recon mission to try and get close enough without being caught.
Overall, the show was very enjoyable and adds a new spin on UFO investigations. If I had to compare it to a show, I would say its a mix between Ghost Hunters and UFO Hunters, which are/were great shows. Does the show answer the question, “Are We Alone”? No, but it provides some interesting perspectives from the cast and also the people they interview, which really gets the viewer to start questioning their own beliefs. Reading the synopsis for the other episodes in the series it seems there will never be a dull moment as they travel all over the US investigating different cases.
If you will be home Friday June 29th, I highly recommend you check out Chasing UFOs on NatGeo, if you won’t be home I suggest you set your DVRs to record this series because it will be one you won’t want to miss. Even if you don’t believe or like UFOs, the show has something for everyone and I feel that is what separates Chasing UFOs from other shows. If you still have doubts then I recommend checking out the shows website for more clips and interactive activities.
Rating: All the fun and excitement of UFO chasing from the comfort of your home. 8.5/10
