I guess I’ve taken over the sequel beat here at Movie Buzzers after reporting on the next Child’s Play film and Anchorman 2 this week. Believe it or not, those sequels are far more expected than the one I’m writing about today, because The Hollywood Reporter is revealing that the sequel to Twins is not only still in the works, but making progress.
Although I initially reported on speculation on a sequel to the 1988 comedy hit about a year ago, we’re finally getting details on the project. The movie will be titled Triplets and will feature Eddie Murphy as the third separated at birth genetically engineered brother to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, who will be returning to their roles as Julius and Vincent. However, this is about as far as the idea has gone, since there is no script yet (and I’m sure many of you are thinking “and it should stay that way.”) The director of the original film, Ivan Reitman, will be stepping into the producer’s role along with his Montecito Picture Co. partners Joe Medjuk, Tom Pollock and Ali Bell.
Would you ever expect that of the three actors it is DeVito who needs this film least? But that’s definitely the case: after the mega-success of The Lorax and the critical success of his show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, he’s in a really good place in his career now. Schwarzenegger is in the midst of a comeback after his lovechild scandal and Eddie Murphy is coming off yet another “comedy” bomb with A Thousand Words. But as always, we will sit and wait and hope that Murphy relearns what made him the funniest man on the planet in the 1980s.
You know, we’ve been waiting an awfully long time for that.
