Our own Alissa LeClair usually covers the award show buzz around here, but considering one of her favorite films of 2010 was nominated for a half dozen “worst of” awards, so I think I’ll spare her from posting about this one. The Golden Raspberry Awards (or “Razzies” for short) have been annually presented since 1981 to recognize the worst films of the year (although, of course, like most award ceremonies, it’s entirely subjective). Some of the nominees for the 2010 awards were announced today… hit “more” to check them out!
As mentioned above, Burlesque leads the pack with six nominations for Worst Screenplay, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actor (Cam Gigandet), Worst Supporting Actress (Kristen Bell and Cher) and Worst Actress (Christina Aguilera).
Interestingly enough though, Burlesque was NOT nominated for Worst Picture. That “honor” was reserved for The Bounty Hunter, Clash of the Titans, The Expendables, Grown Ups, Jonah Hex, Killers, The Last Airbender, Little Fockers, Sex and the City 2, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Vampires Suck and Yogi Bear. Frankly I can’t see how anyone could think The Expendables was one of the worst films of the year, but the Razzies seem to have had issue with Sylvester Stallone for years, as he has been a perennial target, even winning the “Worst Actor of the Century” award in 2000.
Other “standouts” include Jessica Alba being nominated for Worst Actress in FOUR films (The Killer Inside Me, Little Fockers, Machete, and Valentine’s Day) and Emily Blunt for the same category in two films (The Wolfman and Valentine’s Day). Curiously enough, Angelina Jolie was nominated for Worst Actress for her role in The Tourist even though she was nominated for Best Actress for the same role for a Golden Globe! On the male side, George Lopez is nominated for Worst Actor in three films (Marmaduke, The Spy Next Door, and Valentine’s Day), while Mickey Rourke was nominated for his roles in The Expendables and Iron Man 2.
Finally, it’s worth mentioning that a new category — Worst 3-D Film — has been added to recognize the numerous crappy 3-D films that were released this year. In another headscratcher, Piranha 3-D was nominated despite being a solid favorite of critics (it has a 74% positive rating from Rotten Tomatoes).
