In 2015 we will finally have our chance to see the adaptation of one of my favorite video games and one of Ubisoft’s biggest franchises, Assassin’s Creed, on the big screen. The film, which will likely star Michael Fassbender in the lead role, was scripted by acclaimed British playwright Michael Lesslie but it looks like Ubisoft and New Regency are looking for something more as they’ve hired one of the co-writers of The Wolverine to do some rewrites on the script.
In an interview with Creative Screenwriting, writer Scott Frank revealed that he is in fact working on the Assassin’s Creed movie and is doing some rewrites for a film that could potentially launch a major cinematic franchise, exciting stuff for the writer who has also penned other films like Minority Report and Marley & Me. The full quote is below:
“Part of what was so attractive of doing The Wolverine, outside of working with Jim, was the idea that I’ve never done a movie like this before. I’m rewriting Assassin’s Creed right now, and what I love about it is that I’ve never adapted a video game before and it has its own set of challenges. Especially in the world of rewrites, I love trying to do something completely different if I can.”
Rewrites happen all the time but I’m curious to know what major changes he will bring as he certainly helped elevate Wolverine’s character and story in The Wolverine from the pathetic one that began in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. For now all we can do is cross our fingers and hope this video game movie doesn’t suck.
