The new movie, Violet & Daisy, may sound like a warm-hearted chick flick, but don’t judge a movie by its title. With Oscar-winner screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire) in the director’s chair for the first time, the story about teenage assassins is sure to surprise movie-goers.
Recently Variety reported that Academy-Award nominated Saoirse Ronan (Atonement), 16, will star, along with Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 1 & 2), who’s 29, as the title characters. This is quite the departure for Bledel who is known for playing lighter roles in Post Grad and Tuck Everlasting, with the exception of her 2005 turn as the trouble-making and ill-fated, Becky, in Frank Miller’s Sin City. Meanwhile, Ronan, who is rumored to have the acting chops to be the next Meryl Streep, has been taking on dramatic roles since early in her career, and received international acclaim for her portrayal in The Lovely Bones, which earned her a second BAFTA nomination.
Also slated in the cast is the incomparable James Gandolfini, three-time Emmy winner for TV’s The Sopranos. He plays the man that Violet and Daisy are hired to kill, yet the seemingly routine job turns into something much more complicated than they expected. Other cast members currently known at this time, according to IMDB, are Danny Trejo (Machete) and newcomer Cody Horn who plays Barbie Sunday.
Fletcher told Variety, “I wanted to make a film full of left turns.” This certainly has been the case behind the scenes thus far as Bledel replaced Britain’s most buzzed about it-girl and Academy-Award nominee, Carey Mulligan (An Education, Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps) who was originally cast as Violet. MTV.com adds that the film is described as a combination of Thelma & Louise, Superbad, and Pulp Fiction. There is no release date yet for the film, but with the details that have been revealed so far, the anticipation mounts to see the end result!
