VOD Overdose is Movie Buzzers’ coverage of video-on-demand developments and upcoming films premiering on video-on-demand. With an increasing number of studios embracing VOD as a way to premiere and distribute films, this column covers movies that might be worth a look even though they aren’t playing at your local multiplex.
Latest VOD News
Sundance 2013 hasn’t even started yet and one of the expected festival hits is already off the table. Gravitas Ventures has acquired the worldwide VOD rights to Sound City, the Dave Grohl-directed documentary about the prolific titular recording studio. I’ve been following Gravitas Ventures ever since this column began and I think it’s fair to say that this is the company’s biggest acquisition yet, so Gravitas should definitely pop a champagne bottle or two. The documentary will get a February 1 VOD release as well as a limited theatrical release by Variance Films. More VOD Sundance news in next column, I’m sure!
Both Alex and I caught screenings of Eddie the Sleepwalking Cannibal at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and thought it was really funny — Alex gave it a great review and even interviewed the director and one of the stars — so I was very surprised that this really fun film hadn’t been scooped up for distribution over the last few months. But audiences won’t have to wait much longer — not only has Music Box Films acquired the movie for multi-platform release, but the distributor has created a new genre label, Doppelganger Releasing. Along with Eddie the Sleepwalking Cannibal the new branch of the company has also acquired the horror comedy 100 Bloody Acres about two guys who make fertilizer out of… well, you don’t really want to know.

Resolution
“Helping” someone overcome an addiction is often a lesson in futility, and it doesn’t get any easier when the unexpected occurs. Alex gave it a good review, and the directors actually commented on it!
Supporting Characters
I caught this film back at the Tribeca Film Festival and I really enjoyed it. It stars Alex Karpovsky and Tarik Lowe (who also co-wrote the screenplay) as two film editors whose personal lives get intertwined in their zany professional lives.

The Taste of Money
Money definitely can’t buy happiness. After all, there are a ton of films about miserable rich people. The Taste of Money is another, focusing on one of the richest families in Korea and the problems stemming from their personal relationships.
January 28
Knife Fight
With all the recent talk of gun violence in the media, let’s not forget that a knife can be just as deadly. Of course, Knife Fight isn’t really about knives, but it stars Rob Lowe as a political strategist whose specialty is making scandals disappear.

Noobz
If you’ve ever wondered what Jason Mewes is up to these days, he’s in this comedy about competitive video gaming. It gets a DVD release on the same day and will be playing in a handful of theaters on January 25. We will have a review of this one in time for its release.

As Luck Would Have It
Starring the beautiful Salma Hayek alongside Jose Mota, this dark comedy about a family at the center of a huge media story was directed by Alex de la Iglesia (The Day of the Beast). This is another one Alex enjoyed, read his review here.

The ABCs of Death
This horror anthology film from Magnet Releasing features twenty-six short films by as-many directors, each inspired by a particular letter. It covers just about every horror genre and filmmaking style, including animation and claymation.
