VOD Overdose is Movie Buzzers’ coverage of video-on-demand developments and upcoming films premiering on video-on-demand. With an increasing number of studios embracing VOD as a way to premiere and distribute films, this column covers movies that might be worth a look even though they aren’t playing at your local multiplex.
Latest VOD News
There is tons of news in VOD acquisitions this week as both the major and minor distributors are filling out their 2013 schedules.
Cindeigm has acquired Berlin Job (released in the UK as St. George’s Day) for VOD release. The crime thriller heist film was directed by and stars Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels actor Frank Harper and is definitely in that vein.
Fandango has the exclusive first look at the poster and images for Detour, a thriller about a man trapped in his car during a mudslide. Gravitas Ventures will be releasing the film on VOD with a limited theatrical release on March 29.
Magnolia, one of the premiere VOD distributors, has acquired Best Man Down, a comedy starring Justin Long about a best man who dies during a destination wedding forcing the newlyweds to cancel their honeymoon. Magnolia will release the film this summer before a limited theatrical release.
Shout! Factory has made its mark by acquiring unique horror films, and it is continuing that trend by acquiring Dead Shadows, a French horror film about an approaching comet that mutates people into terrifying creatures. It made some festival appearances in Europe, but it’s definitely a film that could get a cult following here and abroad.

Upcoming VOD Releases
(For films premiering on VOD platforms, or hitting VOD after limited theatrical runs.)
February 15
The Jeffrey Dahmer Files
Depressed after not having a date for Valentine’s Day? Well, you could always watch this documentary about notorious serial killer/cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer. All kidding aside, our documentary expert Matthew was a big fan. It will also have a limited theatrical rollout starting on the same day in New York City.
February 19
Rubberneck
Though Alex Karpovsky stars in the lighter-hearted Supporting Characters now on VOD, I preferred his darker turn in Rubberneck, which also debuted at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival (my review is here). Karpovsky’s character is easy to relate to until he does the unthinkable. Karpovsky also wrote and directed this film.
Red Flag
Oh right, in case you haven’t had your fill of this Alex Karpovsky guy, he also stars in this film as himself. It’s a comedy about him touring his latest film across the country.
Hansel & Gretel Get Baked
Is Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters too mainstream for your taste? Well this film recasts the duo as stoners and the witch as a drug pusher. If that sounds like something more up your alley, go for it.
The Bitter Buddha
The Bitter Buddha is a documentary about comedian Eddie Pepitone, who might not be a household name but is a comedian that most big-name comedians respect, including Patton Oswalt and Zach Galifianakis, who are featured in the documentary. It also gets a limited theatrical release on February 15.
February 26
War Witch
Though it’s getting a limited theatrical rollout in March/April, this film about a child soldier in Africa has been hailed as an emotionally-stirring experience.
February 28
Family Weekend
This family comedy stars Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Modine as parents to a 16 year-old overachiever who kidnaps her parents in an attempt to teach them a lesson about being a family. It will receive a limited theatrical release on March 29.
