VOD Overdose is Movie Buzzers’ coverage of video-on-demand developments and upcoming films premiering on video-on-demand. With an increasing number of studios embracing VOD as a way to premiere and distribute films, this column covers movies that might be worth a look even though they aren’t playing at your local multiplex.
Latest VOD News
Though I love going to film festivals, one of the only issues is that you see movies that won’t be released for months or years, so no matter how much you loved/hated them your friends won’t be able to check them out until they’d forgotten about them. Alex had a lot of great things to say about Graceland, a Filipino kidnapping thriller, but I wasn’t able to catch a screening. Luckily it’s finally coming out on VOD from Drafthouse Films on March 28 and will have a theatrical release on April 26. You can check out the poster, which was debuted exclusively on IndieWire, above!
Speaking of Drafthouse Films, it has already closed a deal to distributed a SXSW film before the festival even opens. Drafthouse has acquired A Band Called Death, a documentary about the short-lived 1970s African American punk rock band which was so far ahead of its time that people who listen to the band find it hard to believe its music predates the Ramones and Sex Pistols. The documentary will have a VOD/theatrical release this summer.
If you couldn’t tell by my last name, I’m Irish. But even if I wasn’t Irish, I am sure I would love Irish films, because their either hilarious or deeply moving (actually, sometimes both!) After getting awarded five Irish Film & Television Awards, the drama What Richard Did was acquired by Tribeca Film for a spring VOD/theatrical release. While it’s content is certainly not jolly enough for a St. Patrick’s Day viewing, there’s no question that Tribeca has picked mostly winners recently so there’s no reason to miss this one.

Here’s the odd thing about 6 Souls — this Julianne Moore thriller first appeared in 2009 under the title Shelter. It has been released all over the world, except in the United States.
