VOD Overdose is Movie Buzzers’ coverage of video-on-demand developments and upcoming films premiering on video-on-demand. With an increasing number of studios embracing VOD as a way to premiere and distribute films, this column covers movies that might be worth a look even though they aren’t playing at your local multiplex.
Latest VOD News
Gravitas Ventures will handle the July VOD release of Jug Face, a horror film about a demon who communicates via pottery. Okay, it sound a lot cooler than that (human sacrifice!) and won the Slamdance Grand Prize Screenwriting Award in 2011 for first time writer-director Chad Crawford Kinkle, so its unique premise seems to have much to offer horror fans.
Sex.Violence.FamilyValues is a 47 minute Singaporean anthology comedy film that has been banned in both Singapore and Malaysia in its original form because of a ““racially offensive” scene. However, thanks to VOD anyone in the U.S. who has a taste for banned movies can check out the unedited version later this year from Virgil Films.
In yet another sale coming out of SXSW — though the movie in question was not actually screened during the festival — Cinedigm has acquired the North American rights to low-budget 3D horror film Static. The initial VOD will be in 2D, but the film will be available in its 3D form on DVD, so you might actually wait for the home release of this one if you want the full experience (unlike other horror films, Static was actually shot in 3D).

Upcoming VOD Releases
March 28
Graceland
Alex had a lot of great things to say about this film, a Filipino kidnapping thriller, after seeing it at Tribeca last year. It’s finally coming out on VOD from Drafthouse Films on March 28 and will have a theatrical release on April 26.
March 29
Mental
Now this looks like it could be a lot of fun. The eccentric Shaz (Toni Collette) is hired as a nanny to five girls by a mother who is suffering from a mental breakdown. It gets a limited theatrical release on the same day.
Dog Pound
This 2010 Tribeca Film Festival favorite is set in a juvenile detention center and focuses on a 17 year-old trying to avoid trouble for two weeks so he can be released for good behavior. It will also screen on the same date at Cinema Village in New York
Detour
Detour is a thriller about a man trapped in his car during a mudslide. That sucks, but I bet the movie doesn’t — it seems like it’s along the lines of “confined space horror” like Buried.
April 4
Venus and Serena
I’m surprised it has taken this long for a documentary about the dominant Williams sisters to come out, but perhaps they were just too busy beating everyone at tennis. It will also get a limited theatrical release starting May 10.
April 5
Eddie the Sleepwalking Cannibal
Both Alex and I caught screenings of Eddie the Sleepwalking Cannibal at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and thought it was really funny — Alex gave it a great review and even interviewed the director and one of the stars. Now you can finally check it out too! You can check out the fun poster for the movie above.
April 8
He’s Way More Famous than You
Directed by Michael Urie (star of TV’s Ugly Betty), this comedy is about indie actress Halley Feiffer (played by Halley Feiffer herself, naturally) who is willing to do just about anything to become an even bigger star. The VOD release will be followed by a limited theatrical run staring May 10.
