VOD Overdose is Movie Buzzers’ coverage of video-on-demand developments and upcoming films premiering on video-on-demand. With an increasing number of studios embracing VOD as a way to premiere and distribute films, this column covers movies that might be worth a look even though they aren’t playing at your local multiplex.
Latest VOD News
There isn’t a ton of VOD news this time around, but what is here is pretty interesting…
I’m constantly talking about how VOD serves as a way to resdiscover films that might not have ever gotten a proper release. We’ll see two examples of that in the upcoming months: first, the 2006 horror film All The Boys Love Mandy Lane starring Amber Heard. As I previously reported, Radius-TWC finally struck a deal to release the film after a number of issues kept it from being officially released in the U.S. over the last seven years. It’ll finally get released on VOD September 6 followed by an October 11 theatrical release.
You think waiting seven years to see a film get a proper release is long? Drafthouse has that beat. The distribution arm of the popular theater chain will be re-releasing 1979’s The Visitor, an Italian sci-fi thriller which stars Glenn Ford, Franco Nero (Django!), John Huston, and Sam Peckinpah, among others. The Visitor never got much of a U.S. release, but it has since become a small cult classic. Drafthouse will re-release the film in a remastered version in
Also, though I thought it was pretty silly when I saw it during the New York Film Festival, Entertainment One will be releasing Brian De Palma‘s Passion, which stars Rachel McAdams as a sexy, manipulative boss to Noomi Rapace on VOD on August 1.

Under the Bed
Those horrible childhood dreams about a monster being under your bed finally come true in this horror film.
A Girl and a Gun
While gun ownership is almost always associated with men, it’s easy to forget that there are millions of women gun owners. This documentary looks at the role the 2nd Amendment plays in the lives of American women.

Just Like a Woman
Sienna Miller plays a bored housewife who decides to run off to compete in a belly dancing competition.

Coffee Town
The first film from humor site CollegeHumor.com, Coffee Town is a comedy about a group of young folks trying to save a coffee place from being turned into a bar. Uh, why is that a bad thing?
Jug Face
This is a horror film about a demon who communicates via pottery. Okay, it sound a lot cooler than that (human sacrifice!) and won the Slamdance Grand Prize Screenwriting Award in 2011 for first time writer-director Chad Crawford Kinkle. It also gets an August 9 theatrical release.
July 11
Blood
Two corrupt police officer brothers (Paul Bettany and Stephen Graham) are assigned to investigate a crime that they committed. Sounds like a clever concept — it also stars Mark Strong and Brian Cox.
July 12
Killing Season
Though it gets a same day theatrical release, I’m not sure how many people are interested in seeing two 1970s icons — Robert DeNiro and John Travolta — shooting each other in the 21st century.
July 17
Saturday Morning Mystery
Love Scooby-Doo? You’d probably like this thinly-veiled parody about a group of paranormal investigators and their faithful canine companion.
