VOD Overdose is Movie Buzzers’ coverage of video-on-demand developments and upcoming films premiering on video-on-demand. With an increasing number of studios embracing VOD as a way to premiere and distribute films, this column covers movies that might be worth a look even though they aren’t playing at your local multiplex.
Latest VOD News
Check out the new poster for John Dies at the End above, which will be released on VOD on December 27.
First, here’s a great article from IndieWire which goes into detail on the question on whether or not indie filmmakers need to theatrically distribute their films. It makes a compelling argument for releasing films straight to VOD in order to do bigger business.
To keep the kiddies occupied, Toys ‘R’ Us has launched a family-friendly VOD service at Toysrusmovies.com that will go day-and-date with most of the major studios (including Walt Disney). I’m not sure if the site will issue exclusive content (although the site does have the VOD debut of Madagascar 3), but it’s a great alternative for kid-friendly movies.
Film Movement has acquired the VOD rights to Broken, which debuted in Cannes this year. Directed by British theater director Rufus Norris, it stars Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy and newcomer Eloise Laurence in a coming-of-age drama after witnessing a horrible crime. The film will open in New York and on VOD in early 2013 and will be followed by a limited theatrical release.
Have 15 hours free? If so, Music Box Films is releasing The Story of Film: An Odyssey, an extra-long documentary on the history of cinema, on VOD on November 20. It will also be released on five DVDs on the same day.
Alamo Drafthouse has acquired the Golden Lion-winning South Korean film Pieta, which was directed by Ki-duk Kim. The film courted some controversy when it was awarded the Golden Lion since it has been revealed that the Venice judges wanted to award the top prize to The Master, but was barred from giving too many awards to it.
