VOD Overdose is Movie Buzzers’ coverage of video-on-demand developments and upcoming films premiering on video-on-demand. With an increasing number of studios embracing VOD as a way to premiere and distribute films, this column covers movies that might be worth a look even though they aren’t playing at your local multiplex.
Latest VOD News
We skipped a week for VOD Overdose simply because there wasn’t a lot happening on the VOD front. Let’s get up to speed…
We recently got an e-mail at Movie Buzzers HQ about Under the Milky Way, a new international VOD distributor that will soon be releasing foreign films including Beast, a 2011 thriller from Denmark. There’s a lot of activity on the distributor’s Facebook page, so keep your eye on this distributor for future international releases.
There have been a number of acquisitions in the last half of October which will round out the VOD calendar for the end of the year and the first few months of 2013:
- Magnet Releasing will put out the UK horror film Storage 24 on VOD on December 6, with a theatrical release planned for January.
- Film Movement will release Toronto International Film Festival film The Deflowering of Eva Van End from Dutch director Michiel ten Horn on VOD in early 2013 coinciding with a New York premiere.
- Wolfe Releasing, which focuses on releasing LGBT films, has acquired Petunia, a drama about a dysfunctional New York family which answers the question “hey, what has Thora Birch been up to?”
- Kino Lorber has nabbed the rights to Ain’t in it For My Health: A Film About Levon Helm, a documentary about The Band drummer who died earlier this year from cancer. Though it will have a limited theatrical release, it’ll be available on VOD.
Would this work in the U.S.? Variety is reporting that in the U.K. Domino’s Pizza is offering VOD films from Lionsgate if one orders a pizza. Called “Pizza Box Office”, it offers folks an easy way to get dinner and a movie in one shot.
Finally, there has been a ton of buzz about December Magnet VOD release John Dies at the End, and we finally have a trailer for it here! Definitely an oddball movie, just remember not to spoil the ending!

Upcoming VOD Releases
(For films premiering on VOD platforms, or hitting VOD after limited theatrical runs. Check out trailers for these and other VOD titles at the Independent Movie on Demand YouTube channel here!)
November 1
Attack of the Jurassic Shark
Some wild stuff comes out of Phase 4, and this Roger Corman-meets-Jaws flick is no exception. I wouldn’t expect anything more but a lot of late-night laughs from this one, but maybe a few screams as well! Check out the trailer here, which includes the line “You’re chum, bitch!”
Miss December
Also distributed by Phase 4, Miss December is being put out by Kevin Smith‘s SModcast Pictures and tells the story of a girl convinced that she is the next target of a once-a-month serial killer. You can check out the trailer here — keep your eyes open for former WWF wrestler Al Snow and Gilbert Gottfried.
Deadfall
Magnolia Pictures has been a trailblazer with the VOD/limited theatrical release strategy, and this thriller starring Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde, Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) is the latest of the company’s films to hit VOD before theaters (it will make it out on the big screen on December 7).
