VOD Overdose is Movie Buzzers’ coverage of video-on-demand developments and upcoming films premiering on video-on-demand. With an increasing number of studios embracing VOD as a way to premiere and distribute films, this column covers movies that might be worth a look even though they aren’t playing at your local multiplex.
Latest VOD News
Since it’s the end of the year and the big studios are unleashing their big award contenders, most VOD distributors stay under the radar so they don’t get lost in the shuffle. But there is some news…
Vyer Films, the digital distributor which has made some fantastic foreign films available to U.S. audiences, has announced that big, exciting changes are coming to the company. While it isn’t clear what those changes are, all the movies currently available from Vyer Films will soon be removed. So make sure you check out the site and watch any movies you’d like to see before they go away — remember, you can watch the first 15 minutes of any movie for free!
Though it won’t be out on VOD until January, there’s a great trailer for the ABCs of Death, a horror anthology film from Magnet Releasing that features twenty-six short films by as-many directors, each inspired by a particular letter. It covers just about every horror genre and filmmaking style, including animation and claymation. Graham brought you the poster straight from SXSW back in April, but Yahoo! has the exclusive first red band trailer from the movie, which you can check out below.
Another cool-sounding VOD movie set for next year is All Superheroes Must Die, starring, written and directed by Jason Trost (who did the same all-inclusive job on The FP, which Brandon loved but David hated). The movie is about four superheroes rendered powerless by their arch-rival, who forces them to complete increasingly vicious challenges in order to save the lives of civilians Image Entertainment has just put out a trailer (though it retains the film’s earlier title, VS), and even if the costumes aren’t up to big studio standards the concept is awesome. Check the trailer out here! The movie will hit VOD on January 1 and have a limited theatrical release on January 4, with a DVD/Blu-ray release coming at the end of January.

November 30
Young & Wild
A seventeen girl in Santiago, Chile who is obsessed with sex finds an outlet for her passion with a blog that exposes the details of her sex life. Naturally, why it seems fun at first it soon becomes something she can’t handle. A Sundance Film Festival release, this one gets a limited theatrical release on the same day.
December 4
Baytown Outlaws
Starring Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria, this redneck action/revenge comedy looks like it could be a ton of fun.
December 6
Allegiance
This movie has a really clever and moving idea for a drama — Allegiance follows a military unit on the night before they are deployed to Iraq.
