VOD Overdose is Movie Buzzers’ coverage of video-on-demand developments and upcoming films premiering on video-on-demand. With an increasing number of studios embracing VOD as a way to premiere and distribute films, this column covers movies that might be worth a look even though they aren’t playing at your local multiplex.
Latest VOD News
In perhaps the biggest news of the last two weeks, GoDigital and Lionsgate have picked up the VOD rights to The Big Fix, the 2011 Cannes documentary about the Gulf oil spill. I’m actually surprised it took so long for someone to nab these rights since there’s likely a lot of interest in this.
On the GoDigital note, that VOD company has recently put out two trailers for its upcoming films: You, Me & The Circus and She Wants Me. Both are scheduled for release later this year.
In great news for people who (like me) are interested in alternate distribution methods for films, Tugg — the service which allows fans to book screenings of movies in theaters if a certain amount of tickets are pre-sold — is teaming with Paramount’s Insurge label to release the horror movie The Loved Ones. I absolutely love the concept behind this prom horror movie, and you can check out the trailer at Deadline here.
I’ve been really excited by the releases coming out of Tribeca Film over the last year, so I’m definitely interested in For Ellen, a family drama starring Paul Dano and Jon Heder (of all people!) Deadline reports that it has been picked up for a New York release, but will be available on VOD as well.

May 15:
American Battleship
Ah, The Asylum — home of the mockbuster. Just in time for the release of Universal’s Battleship you can check out American Battleship, starring Mario Van Peebles and Carl Weathers. Curiously the film isn’t currently listed on The Asylum’s website, which might have something to do with Universal’s lawsuit for copyright infringement. As far as I know, however, American Battleship is set for a May 15 VOD release!
May 18:
Trishna
This adaptation of Tess of the D’Ubervilles that transports the events of the novel to India stars Freida Pinto, so I’m surprised it never got a wider release despite some strong praise on the film festival circuit.
Entrance
This movie’s website seems to have been down for some time, so promotional material on this movie is basically nonexistent. So unfortunately that’s about all I have to say about it!
May 21:
After Porn Ends
This is a fascinating concept for a documentary: what happens to adult film stars after they leave the industry? I mean, that career is not exactly known for its longevity or generous pension plans. Most didn’t grow up wanting that career, so do they fulfill their dreams later, or are they “cursed” by the stigma of their previous career? Based on a tweet from the director, we’ll know this will definitely be available on the 21st!
May 25:
Take This Waltz
Check out Melissa’s review of this Seth Rogen-Michelle Williams drama here! It will also have a limited theatrical release in June.
The Pact
Also set for a June theatrical release, The Pact is another horror film that has a trailer which creeps the heck out of me although reviews out of Sundance were less than stellar.
