VOD Overdose is Movie Buzzers’ coverage of video-on-demand developments and upcoming films premiering on video-on-demand. With an increasing number of studios embracing VOD as a way to premiere and distribute films, this column covers movies that might be worth a look even though they aren’t playing at your local multiplex.
Latest VOD News
Not much to say on the VOD front this time around — seems like most of us would rather spend the summer outside than in front of our televisions or computers! Can’t blame anyone for that…
But there is ONE piece of huge news: Paramount has launched a new division to acquire indie films for limited release, including VOD. Paramount has had a similar division — Paramount Vantage — but it generally shied away from VOD and had few successes in recent years. Paramount has been missing the VOD boat for a while, and since it’s such an awesome boat it’s about time that they joined.
And there have been two key acquisitions in recent weeks. First, Entertainment One has acquired Knights Of Badassdom (which stars Game Of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage) about a group of nerdy role players who actually have to battle a real demon. Second, Gravitas Ventures has acquired the documentary Dear Mr. Watterson, about Calvin & Hobbes creator Bill Watterson and the impact his comic strip had on a generation. Both sound like two great releases you can check out this fall (Alex saw Dear Mr. Watterson and found it to be very enjoyable).

I caught this Brian De Palma film during last year’s New York Film Festival (Check out my review here!) and I really can only say one good thing about it: star Rachel McAdams is incredibly beautiful in it. It also stars Noomi Rapace, Karoline Herfurth, and Paul Anderson.
