VOD Overdose is Movie Buzzers’ coverage of video-on-demand developments and upcoming films premiering on video-on-demand. With an increasing number of studios embracing VOD as a way to premiere and distribute films, this column covers movies that might be worth a look even though they aren’t playing at your local multiplex.
Latest VOD News
One of my favorite things about writing this column is finding out about the exciting new distribution models that have come out in recent years. Variety is reporting that Wolfe, which primary releases LGBT films is launching a $3.99 to watch/$14.99 to buy worldwide VOD site at WolfeOnDemand.com (it will accept six different currencies, including the US dollar). Even more exciting, there will be program which will reward fans for referring others to watch the films. That sounds like a good deal to me!
IndieWire has some major announcements of acquisitions that will hit VOD later this year or in early 2013. First, Film Movement will release the French film Alyah, which screened at the Cannes Film Festival. In another acquisition of a film I literally had not heard of at all until now, the Jesse Eisenberg/Tracy Morgan/Melissa Leo film Why Stop Now has been picked up by IFC Films for a July 6 VOD release and an August limited theatrical release. There hasn’t even been a trailer yet for a film, but I imagine one HAS to come pretty soon. Lastly, the baseball documentary I reported about a few weeks back, Pelotero, which is about Major League Baseball camps in the Dominican Republic, which produces some of the games’ best players.

June 21:
The Trials of Zander Peterson
From first time writer/director/producer Damion L. Smith, this thriller looks to be sufficiently mind-boggling. It’s pretty cool how in-depth the movie’s Facebook goes into its production.
June 26:
The Do-Deca-Pentathlon (Review posting on July 2nd)
The Duplass Brothers (Jeff, Who Lives at Home) shot this film about two competitive brothers on their own a few months back and it appeared during SXSW, but is finally getting a release now on VOD ahead of its July 6 limited release.
June 29:
360
There are some big names in 360 — Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law, and Rachel Weisz — but there isn’t much word on what it’s actually about. Watch the trailer and come back and tell me, okay? It gets a theatrical release August 3.
July 6:
2 Days in New York
A festival favorite, this sequel to Julie Delpy‘s 2 Days in Paris is getting a VOD release ahead of its August 10 limited release. Written, directed, and starring Delpy, the movie also features Chris Rock as her new boyfriend.
