People have been talking about a Wanted sequel way before the first film ever hit theaters. Would it happen? Could it happen? And if so, what direction would it go? Given that the film is based on Mark Millar‘s comic series, one would think it would be quite simple to make a sequel, that was until you see the end of the first film and then you might not understand how or why a sequel would be needed.
Talks about the sequel were killed about a year ago when Millar said there were no plans for a sequel in the works and that even though Derek Haas and Michael Brandt were hired to write the script to the sequel, nothing more ever came of it. Also, one of the stars from the film, Angelina Jolie, could not be convinced to come back for a sequel (Yes, I know what you are thinking), so that was another set back.
Let’s jump forward to a few months ago, director Timur Bekmambetov, said that there were a few more issues that have arisen with a sequel to the film, with the latest being that James McAvoy is in pretty high demand right now and his scheduling was problematic in addition to Universal wanting too much control over the film. Not to mention Haas and Brandt were no longer writing the sequel. That was until yesterday
Our good friend Twitter was able to grace us with this tweet from Derek Haas:
Michael and I were just hired by Uni to write WANTED 2
The Wrap was quick to reach out to Haas who provided that a director has not been hired for the film as of yet. He did however provide this brief and very vague plot description of where they are going with the film.
The film will take off after the events of what just happened. It will pick up Wesley (James McAvoy) a few years later and go back in for another round.
This is all well in good if they can get McAvoy to come back to the film and/or make it work around his schedule.
