It looks like we have another Steven Spielberg classic to look forward to at the end of the year, and I don’t mean the creepiness that is The Adventures of Tintin. War Horse, the international hit play based on a British children’s book that received five Tony Awards for its once-limited-but-now-unlimited-because-it-keeps-selling-tickets Broadway run, will hit movie screens on December 25.
The sure-to-be Oscar favorite definitely reminds me of one of my all-time favorite (but often overlooked) Spielberg films, Empire of the Sun. In fact, if you discount 1941 (and almost everyone does), some of Spielberg’s best work has come out of films set in or during a war. Of course, it’s usually World War II, but there’s no reason Spielberg can’t transfer that cinematic magic to World War I. This has the potential to be Spielberg’s best film since Saving Private Ryan, so I am definitely buying into this epic trailer.
From director Steven Spielberg comes “War Horse,” an epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets—British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land. The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse—an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure.”
War Horse stars Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irvine, Benedict Cumberbatch and Toby Kebbell. Check it out below, then tell us what you think in the comments:
