It seems braintrusts are all the rage these days. Rather than just churn out films with a single producer at the helm, many studios are employing people to oversee groups of projects, hoping to get a singular voice and uniqueness within the works.
There is a focus on branding a film through its content via a singular vision (or a like-minded group vision) instead of simply being branded through the distributor. Pixar has had it for years, and with Marvel and Fox both tapping people to guide their superhero franchises, Warner Bros. has decided they want in on the action. It appears that this decision has been mainly modeled off of Pixar, as the braintrust is one for animation, something WB has had relatively little success in recently. To that end, John Requa, Glenn Ficarra, Phil Lord, Chris Miller , Nicholas Stoller and Jared Stern have been selected as the animation braintrust.
Theis choice of people is quite intriguing, as not all of them have had animation experience. Miller, Stoller, and Stern have worked on animation, but Ficarra and Requa have not. Perhaps WB hopes to incorporate some of their directorial ideas into future films? The group is diverse—perhaps too diverse, as one can only speculate the types of animated films they can come up with. Time will tell.
