Last week Graham posted the trailer for Gangster Squad and mentioned that a release date for the film hadn’t been figured out yet. The film has actually bounced around on the schedule a bit, but Warner Bros. has finally announced a definite release date, along with the movement of another anticipated film.
According to Deadline, Gangster Squad will be released on September 7, a few weeks earlier than its original mid-October release date. That’s usually a great sign, and the September 7 date is a good fit since there’s nothing similar around it. Perhaps the positive buzz from the trailer prodded Warners to push the movie out a little earlier. Likewise Beautiful Creatures, which stars Emily Rossum, Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, and Viola Davis, has moved up two days to Wednesday, February 13 (obviously to snag some sweethearts looking to spend Valentine’s Day at the movies).
However, Gravity 3D — the long-awaited follow-up to Children of Men by director Alfonso Cuaron — has been pushed back from its November 21 release date to an unspecified 2013 date. The reportedly two-actor film — the movie stars Sandra Bullock and features George Clooney in a supporting role — has undergone an extensive post-conversion into 3D, an odd move for a dramatic film (you can read more about that in my earlier post here). Though pushing a film back is usually a bad sign, November/December 2012 is really packed with sure-to-be hits so I can’t blame Warners for trying to give Gravity 3D, which might take some pushing, some extra attention.
