There are some books that seem like they just won’t work as films. Some, like Catcher in the Rye, haven’t been adapted at all for that very reason. Others, like The Great Gatsby, have been adapted several times, with none of those adaptations being particularly good. Should it come as a surprise then that Sony has another version of The Great Gatsby in the works? Just wait until you hear who is involved…
Baz Luhrmann — best known as the director for Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge — is currently “workshopping” an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece that he co-wrote with frequent collaborator Craig Pearce (Pearce co-wrote the two previously named films with Luhrmann). According to Deadline.com, this script was “workshopped” with Leonardo DiCaprio reading for Gatsby, Tobey Maguire reading for narrator and Gatsby’s neighbor Nick Carraway, and Rebecca Hall reading for the role of Daisy. Now don’t think too much about that cast — there’s no indication that those actors will be in the film, much less that they’re even interested in being in the film, especially since Amanda Seyfried and Natalie Portman have both been mentioned for the role of Daisy if Sony decides to green light the film. That’s certainly a varied assortment of actresses!
Well I can’t say I’m either holding my breath for this or actually looking forward to it, but what do you think, folks? Do you have interest in Gatsby brought to you by Luhrmann? Or do you already think this is another remake/adaptation that we just don’t need to see?
