I have to admit, one look at this film’s title got me interested since I myself happen to be a white Irish drinker. Nonetheless, according to Deadline Hollywood the titular film, written and directed by John Gray, was picked up by Screen Media Films, which plans to release the film in Spring 2011. Set in 1975 Brooklyn, White Irish Drinkers tells the story of two brothers (Nick Thurston and Geoff Wigdor) who turn to a life of crime to escape their lives with their abusive father (Avatar‘s Stephen Lang). This is set against the anticipation for a one-night-only Brooklyn performance of the Rolling Stones (which, as a Stones fan, I know never actually happened, although they played Madison Square Garden for several nights in 1975 — I wonder if that’s a plot point or a mistake on the part of the article writers…?)
The film, which premiered in September at the Toronto International Film Festival, didn’t make a huge splash (it debuted late in the festival) but has received overwhelmingly positive buzz. Check out the trailer below, and let us know in the comments if you think this was a wise grab for Screen Media!
