Universal’s 2010 The Wolfman film may have won an Oscar for Best Makeup but it definitely wasn’t nominated for any of the more prestigious categories. Anyone who saw the film — which was actually shot and completed in 2008 — will tell you that its flaws outweigh its strengthens (and that’s putting it mildly — the critics absolutely trashed it). In fact, director Joe Johnson trashed it himself in an interview with Comic Book Movie, saying “The production was a leaky, rudderless ship in a perfect storm suffering from bad decisions, infighting, reluctance of the powers-that-be to take responsibility, and too many under-qualified cooks in the kitchen.” Wow, tell us how you really feel, Joe! It all seems somewhat disappointing, since not only would star Benicio del Toro be the perfect wolfman in any other film, but Universal has been trying to relaunch its classic monsters franchises with both 2004’s Van Helsing and The Wolfman, and neither could pull it off.
Which is why the next piece of news is so surprising: Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Universal is greenlighting a direct-to-DVD sequel based on the strong DVD sales of The Wolfman and its Oscar win. Michael Tab (whose only writing credit that IMDB lists is a 2006 direct-t0-DVD Tom Sizemore movie titled Ring Around the Rosie). There’s no indication of what the film will cover — Bloody Disgusting initially reported that it would be a reboot, but then reported that it would be a sequel. Now, there’s a chance that a low budget, director-driven film could avoid a lot of the behind the scenes squabbling that seemed to ruin the original, so we’ll see about that. It’s fair enough to say, however, that Joe Johnson will be a little too busy counting his Captain America: The First Avenger money to direct this sequel.
Any interesting a direct-to-DVD Wolfman sequel? Who so you think could fill the hairy shoes of Benicio del Toro? Let us know in the comments below!
