While most moviegoers liked The Hangover Part II, the general consensus is that it was a not-as-funny rehash of the original. Still, with the second film grossing $581 million worldwide (even more than the original’s $467 worldwide take), there’s little arguing over whether or not it was a hit. There was even interest in a Part III even before Part II made it into theaters, so it’s obvious that audiences love Phil, Stu, Alan, and, to a much lesser extent, Doug (sorry Justin Bartha). But as it turns out, according to The Hollywood Reporter a third entry in The Hangover series is very possible, as the three stars — Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper, and Zach Galifianakis — are interested in reprising their Wolfpack roles… for a big pay raise, of course.
While the trio each made under $1 million each for the first film, the second film netted them $5 million each plus a percentage of the box office. The trio are looking for $15 million each, plus a percentage of the box office, for a third movie. Considering that the franchise has grossed over a billion dollars (and that’s not including the healthy DVD sales and merchandising), this is a price that Warner Bros. is very willing to pay.
As for a potential plot, it is apparently set in Los Angeles, with previous rumors suggesting it might involved the gang breaking Alan out of a mental hospital. I’m down with that — it’s at least something different — but the fact that I can’t recall there ever being a successful comedy “threequel” makes me wonder if it’s even worth it from a comedy standpoint. Obviously to Warner Bros. it’s definitely worth the investment from a financial standpoint.
Craig Mazin, who wrote Part II, and Todd Phillips, who directed both previous movies, are expected to return should the film go into production. It’s hoped that filming could start this summer for a Memorial Day 2013 release.
