For those of you who have ever read Max Brooks novel World War Z, you know it reads much like a documentary. For those of you haven’t read the book, let me explain. The book doesn’t really tell a story about a zombie war rather it explores what happened to cause the zombie war. It revolves around a U.N. researcher who travels around the world, interviewing survivors to try and figure out what took place and how this zombie apocalypses came to be. Like I said, previously the book has a very documentary feel and almost seems like you are reading the survivors memoirs.
Clearly this style of a book would be very difficult to translate into a film because it lacks characters and the audience really can’t relate or latch onto anyone because it’s pure recollections. Paramount has confirmed what many assumed and that the film will stray away from the book, making it more character driven. The film version which is being directed by Marc Forster, will take place as the zombie outbreak is happening and will follow a U.N. agent who is racing around the world to try and stop it. Here is the official plot description:
The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself. Mireille Enos plays Gerry’s wife Karen Lane; Danielle Kertesz plays his comrade in arms, Segen.
Will fans be upset that the film won’t follow the book to a T? Probably but from a film stand point, I just don’t see the book being a very good film if they were to follow it precisely. Now if someone wanted to do a epilogue or sequel and maybe make it more like a documentary or try the Cloverfield approach, then that might be pretty interesting. Hopefully a trailer will come out before the end of the year and we can really see what we are in for.
The film is schedule for a December 21,2012 release.
