I’m amazed by the longevity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While I’m aware that the characters originated in an independent comic book, they’re best known as a Saturday morning cartoon series — and how many of those have legitimately remained popular for over two decades? While Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo aren’t as popular as they were in their 1980s peak, with a new television cartoon series coming out there seems like there’s no end to the Ninja Turtle franchise. In addition, get ready for a new live-action movie, rebooting the series after three live action movies and 2007’s computer animated continuation.
According to Variety, director Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles, the upcoming Wrath of the Titans) is in negotiations with Paramount to direct the new live-action film, which will reboot the series. The script was written by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol) and one of the producers is Michael Bay, so you’ll get your action quota filled. I’d assume that the live-action film will nonetheless utilize motion capture technology for the turtles, but honestly those costumes from the early 1990s films really don’t look all that bad even today, so I imagine with today’s technology they would look even better.
There’s no release date in mind yet, but I wouldn’t plan on this coming out any earlier than 2014. Still, I can already tell that this kid is excited:
