We’re another step closer to seeing the massive three film and TV series adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower fantasy novel series brought to life as Deadline reports that Mark Verheiden has joined the project as co-writer and executive producer.
Verheiden is the writer behind TV’s Battlestar Galatica, Heroes, Smallville, and both the TV series and movie of Time Cop. However, his credits in the comic book field are even more impressive — Verheiden has done runs on Superman, Aliens, Predator, and Evil Dead comics. So it’s safe to say that Verheiden knows his way around sci-fi and fantasy, which is what makes the world of Stephen King’s Dark Tower unique. Verheiden is joining writer Akiva Goldsmith and Goldsmith‘s frequent collaborator director Ron Howard (they worked together as writer/director on A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, The Da Vinci Code, and Angels & Demons) are the other key members of the Dark Tower film.
Rumors have been flying on who will play Roland the gunslinger, the main character of the series, with Javier Bardem, Christian Bale, and Viggo Mortensen listed as possibilities (with Bardem receiving the most buzz — IMDB even lists him as in the cast even though no official announcement has been made). The seven book series will be distilled into three films, with a television series airing between the installments. The first film is set for a May 17, 2013 release.
