In a move that has some comics fans scratching their heads, Spanish actor Álex González will be playing Riptide in the X-Men origins film X-Men: First Class. What’s the issue?
Well, besides the fact that he’s a little known character, he wasn’t introduced in the X-Men comics until 1986 and didn’t play a prominent role until this century although the film is set to take place during the 1960s (during the era of the original X-Men comics) according to director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass). Then again, it’s been made very clear that First Class is making no effort to follow the original comics, so what the heck. I mean, can anyone complain about January Jones as Emma Frost, despite the continuity?
After all, Riptide’s powers include spinning really, really fast and shooting out spikes he grows out of his bones, which is about six times better than the “I can grow spikes out of my face” powers exhibited by Kid Omega/Quill in X-Men: The Last Stand. Come on, spikes out of your face? That’s a power? That’s like claiming really bad acne is a mutant power.
Anyway… X-Men: First Class is due out on June 3, 2011.
