We have known for quite some time now that Zack Snyder would not be returning to the world of 300 due to his involvement with Man of Steel. Also it was long suggested the the much rumored sequel/prequel would focus on Xerxes and would be titled the same, until today.
Deadline has received word that the film has been officially been renamed to Xerxes to 300: Battle of Artemisia. It will still focus around Xerxes as expected. Also the list of possible directors has been narrowed down to just two potential candidates: Noam Murro (Smart People) and Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan & Unknown).
The film will be based on the upcoming comic book by Frank Miller and will tell the history of Xerxes and his rise to power in Persia. The film will be a prequel and is rumored to take place 10 years prior to the events of 300.
There has been no confirmation yet on whether or not Gerard Butler will be reprising his role as Leonidas, but given the time period of the film, it seems there might be an opportunity for him to.
