X-Men: Days of Future Past seems to be the X-Men film that fans have wanted since 2003’s X2 because it just broke $660 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing film in the franchise — over $200 million more than the previous champ, 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. It’s no surprise that 20th Century Fox already announced a sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse, which is set for a May 27, 2016 release.
Until now we’ve basically heard that the sequel would be set sometime after the 1973 “past” scenes in Days of Future Past and the 2000ish “present” era of the original X-Men movie. Writer Simon Kinberg appeared on the The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith podcast and revealed that the film will be set in 1983. Curiously enough, the character Apocalypse (who will be the villain of the film) was not introduced in the comics until 1986, though much of his background and origin was not established until the 1990s. But this setting will allow the film to include much of the “First Class” era team, albeit ten years older than they were in Days of Future Past. Expected to return for X-Men: Apocalypse will be James McAvoy (Professor Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Evan Peters (Quicksilver) and, of course, Hugh Jackman (Wolverine). In addition, younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm are expected to appear in the film played by new actors, and Channing Tatum will likely debut as Gambit at some point in the film.
Since we know that X-Men producers love tying real-world events to their period X-Men films we ought to think about what major event in 1983 the film’s storyline could be tied to. If you have any ideas, let us know in the comments below!
