In a strange turn of events, Fox has announced that they are actually going to delay filming of the X-Men: First Class sequel so that Lionsgate can move forward with their production of Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games.
THR says a source of theirs is telling them “Fox is informing talent agencies Thursday that the studio plans to begin shooting its in-development sequel to X-Men: First Class in January.”
The sequel will begin shooting in January of 2013 with Matthew Vaughn directing once again. If you will remember, Vaughn shot the first film in a short period of time and was able to do post production and SFX just in time for the release. Originally it was assumed that the sequel would begin production this Fall, but thanks to the recent success of The Hunger Games and Jennifer Lawrence, Fox will do the cordial thing here and push back their film so that Lionsgate can begin working on Catching Fire.
The interesting thing here is that Fox originally had Lawrence under contract for her role as Mystique before she signed on to do The Hunger Games, so naturally they have first dibs on her filming obligations. However in a smart marketing move by Fox they decided to let Lionsgate move forward with Catching Fire, in hopes of bottling and cashing in on Lawrence’s stardom and will help put even more people in theaters for the X-Men Sequel.
With Catching Fire shooting sometime in the Fall and then X-Men starting in January, you can only imagine that Lionsgate will want to begin production of Mockingjay as soon as she is done with X-Men, which means Lawrence will be pretty worn out after these films are said and done.
