Usually when a title for a film is released, it doesn’t really tell us a whole lot about the film nor should it be considered a spoiler. Hell it’s the title, how much of a film can it really spoil? Well unfortunately if you are a fan of the X-Men comics, the new title for the sequel to X-Men: First Class will give some of the film away.
Be aware this should be considered a spoiler!
Brian Singer sat down with the guys over at IGN and discussed what we can expect from the next X-Men film and the direction they were headed with it. Here is what he had to say:
It’s being written now and it starts shooting in a few months… It’s going to be very ambitious. It’s called Days of Future Past, and it deals with aspects of that comic but also some new things. I just don’t want to give anything away. Matthew Vaughn will be directing, and we’re very excited about that.
So there you have it, straight from the producers mouth, the second film will be called X-Men: Days of Future Past. So some may be wondering how this is considered a spoiler, well let me explain.
X-Men: Days of Future Past was a series Chris Claremont wrote back in the early 80’s. The story goes something like this, it deals with a dystopian alternative future in which mutants are incarcerated in internment camps. An older Kitty Pryde transfers her mind into the younger, present-day Kitty Pryde, who brings the X-Men to prevent a fatal moment in history which triggers anti-mutant hysteria. (via Wikipedia)
Looks like we will be seeing a ton of Ellen Paige since the story revolves around her character Kitty Pryde, which is perfectly fine in my book. It will be interesting to see how Singer and Vaughn pull this one off because one wrong move and the entire film could end up being terrible and confusing. It’s interesting to see them heading this route and hopefully they will stick pretty closely to the comic unlike that bogus Phenix story line in the original films, we don’t speak about.
It seems as if Singer knows what he is doing with this franchise so I won’t do him the dishonors of mentioning that poor excuse of a film Mr. Brett Ratner directed awhile back. Singer did mention something very interesting as well during the interview about their vision for this rebooted franchise and growing the X-Men Universe.
I think there’s a strong desire to broaden out the universe. The X-Men universe on its own is every bit as big as the Marvel Universe. And I think it’s time to reach out and explore it, and perhaps even bring some connectivity between the films, as Marvel’s done so well.
We can only hope he stays true to his word and vision and finally explores the confusing universe that is X-Men. Who know, maybe we might see some mutants scattered in the next Avengers film, that would be cool right! Right?
