Movie Buzzers, along with the rest of the entertainment media, recently reported on the rumors that director Robert Zemeckis would be taking on a live-action remake of the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz. So for those of you that haven’t found out already, Entertainment Weekly has officially set the record straight saying that the mastermind behind such hit films like the Back to the Future series and Forrest Gump will not be helming the project. To read more about this, hit the jump!
Although Zemeckis will not be involved in the retelling of such a legendary piece of cinematic history, it is true that he attended a meeting to discuss the possibility of remaking it with Warner Bros. Bloggers everywhere (including myself) were in a furious uproar “like so many flying monkeys,” using EW’s words, over the fact that such a travesty of an idea could be in the works.
At this time, it seems that discussions at Warner Bros. have not been completely abolished as they are in the “very preliminary and nebulous” stages. If a production team is readied before Sam Raimi and Disney’s prequel Oz: The Great & Powerful, tentatively starring Robert Downey Jr., it’s safe to say that moviegoers will have a big screen battle of wicked and good witches, wizards, and twisters oh my! My vote is on Raimi’s vision since there is nothing quite like the original Wizard of Oz and Judy Garland’s darling portrayal of Dorothy, and of course little Toto too. Like the movie says, “There’s no place like home.” There really is no other film that can deliver that message.
