She was the female lead in Avatar. She is Uhura is JJ Abrams’ Star Trek films. Without a doubt, if a posterwoman for the space opera sci-fi gene had to be decided, there is little doubt the title would fall to Zoe Saldana.
Having played the main female role in two gigantic sci-fi films (and a third coming up) in two franchises, one could make the case that Saldana had gone past the point of no return. But it appears she isn’t content with being a Na’vi or an Enterpise crewmember: she wants to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well.
It was announced that Saldana is in talks for the role of Gamora in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (coming August 2014). Gamora, a green-skinned assassin raised as the daughter of Avengers mid-credit surprise Thanos, is a pivotal member of the galactic team, and it is extremely likely that Saldana will be reprising the role if the film is successful. Is the actress overloading herself with so many sci-fi franchises, and is she risking pigeonholing herself? Perhaps. But it’s also just as likely we’ll have a blast watching her on screen in space once again!
Guardians of the Galaxy has already cast Chris Pratt as Star-Lord and Dave Bautista as Drax, and with Gamora in talks, there are only two members of the group left to be cast, as well as the actor that will be playing Thanos. More news as it develops.
