Well since I covered the possible Ghostbusters sequel, why not cover another longtime in-development comedy sequel too? See how close we are (or not) to getting Zoolander 2 after the jump!
According to writer Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder), there is a draft of a script for Zoolander 2 featuring the return of both Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) who, now in their 40s, are no longer the hottest males models in the fashion world. Theroux also mentioned that Zoolander 2 would feature the return of Mugatu, the eccentric villain played by Will Ferrell in the first film, as well as a part for a new villain “inspired by” Jonah Hill. Oh, so I guess this new villain curses a lot and/or acts awkwardly introverted until he gets drunk, since that seems to be the extent of Jonah Hill’s comedy characters.
For all of its zaniness, Zoolander was very clever in the way it satirized the cutthroat world of fashion, and a sequel could effectively continue that approach with Derek and Hansel’s fall from fame. What do models do once they’re no longer models, anyway? When they’re played by Stiller and Wilson, the possibilities are probably hysterical. The film is currently penciled in (very lightly) for 2012.
